Whew! It was a super busy week last week! I had an all day Travel themed sewing camp that I taught. These girls and I were together from 9AM-4PM everyday last week at CityCraft! I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls!!
We had so much fun learning the basics, then moving into our projects for the week. Our first project was a scrappy travel tote. (Their finished ones are in the photo above.)
Boy did they love digging through the scrap box and sorting the fabrics! We learned about using a rotary cutter safely, cutting pieces to specific dimensions without the use of a pattern, and a bit about applique.
Next up we talked about the pattern design process. They then sketched and designed their own travel pillows, drew up the pattern pieces, and stitched away! Aren’t these two “twin” monsters and the turtle adorable?
They all have pockets in the back for an iPad or book too!
After that we got started on our 3rd project of the week which was a travel/sketch journal that I designed. I made my sample as more of a sketch journal. (Hopefully I’ll get a tutorial of this one up next week for everyone!)
Two of the girls made sketch type journals and one of the girls made an island/ocean themed one to remind her of one of her favorite trip to the Cayman Islands.
Isn’t that little sting ray the cutest?!?
The top flap opens up to reveal a zippered section for holding sketching tools or souvenirs!
And it opens up all the way to reveal the paper notebook and extra pockets!
Halfway through the week Melissa Ybarra from Iza Pearl Design was able to come and talk to the girls about the fabric design process. They LOVED it!
For our 4th project of the week they decided that they wanted to draw names and secretly make the next project for another one of the girls at camp. They pulled from what they’d learned about each other… favorite colors, fabrics, etc. I loved how secretive they were trying to be as they chose the fabrics and design. They all embellished them a little differently too!
We had fabric flowers, applique monograms, and little handmade bowtie embellishment by the time we were through! (You’ve probably seen this pattern before, it’s my Garden Party Clutch! They are also holding their travel journal covers here too.)
Embellishment Close-Ups
Since they had sooo much fun digging through the scrap bin, and we were finishing up our travel themed camp I thought that a scrappy map inspired by See Kate Sew would be the perfect last project.
With about 30 minutes left of camp we finished up by picking up cupcakes and celebrating!
Great job girls!!

I love that the kids are coming back to learning sewing this way. It’s an amazing skill to have. They did such a great job too!!

Yes! It always amazes me how quickly they catch on and how excited they get about the projects! They don’t shy away from hard things or get frustrated if it’s not perfect, they just enjoy working on their sewing!
